LONDON, England (7th September 2018) – Mindful Little Yogis is a new book to help children with special needs master emotional self-regulation and improve mental wellbeing. As a step-by-step guide to calming strategies for children, the book contains fun, practical mindfulness activities, adaptable for a range of abilities, including autism, ADHD and other special needs. With simple breathing techniques, sensory integration, yoga games, and other activities, children learn to self-regulate and find a sense of calm during times of anxiety and other heightened emotions.
Mindful Little Yogis reflects the growing need for teachers, parents and therapists to integrate inclusive mindfulness into every day routines at school and home. Around one in ten children and young people in the UK are affected by mental health issues, whilst one in five school-aged children in England, have a diagnosis of special educational needs. Social, emotional and developmental conditions affect children’s experiences of learning, communication skills, and how they feel about themselves and others.
The modern-day classroom is changing, and in light of students’ differing social and emotional needs, schools are being called upon to provide inclusive strategies to build mental resilience and support emotional wellbeing. Under new government proposals, mental health awareness will be a mandatory part of the curriculum for primary and secondary schools from autumn 2020. Damian Hinds, Education Secretary in England, says: “I want to make sure that our children are able to grow up to become happy and well-rounded individuals who know how to deal with the challenges of the modern world.”
Nicola Harvey, the author of Mindful Little Yogis is a qualified special needs teacher, therapist and children’s mindfulness practitioner with over six years’ teaching experience in UK primary and secondary schools. During her time as a special needs teacher, Nicola was surprised at the social pressures and academic demands placed upon children from as young as 4 years old to conform. She saw first-hand how this triggered anxieties and other mental states in children. Nicola decided to integrate mindfulness and therapeutic self-regulation tools into her classroom sessions. This transformed her teaching methods and improved the social, emotional and learning outcomes of the children she worked with. Inspired by this experience, Nicola devised the content for her book, Mindful Little Yogis, due to be published on 21st August 2018 by Singing Dragon, an imprint of international publishing house, Jessica Kingsley Publishers.
Nicola Harvey states “this book was mindfully written to empower children with special needs and to make a lasting impact on their lives. The simple techniques aim to develop the self-awareness, emotional intelligence and resilience children can carry with them for life.”
