If you’ve not yet heard of CBD and its increased use in wellbeing and medicinal products over recent years, you may be surprised to hear of the benefits of this derivative of the cannabis plant. What exactly is CBD and why how its popularity in health products been growing at such a rapid pace?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is the second most prominent cannabinoid found in hemp and cannabis. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds naturally occurring in the cannabis plant family. Unlike the most prominent cannabinoid known as THC, CBD is not psychoactive, meaning it does not affect your cognitive function or give you a ‘high’ which cannabis is so widely associated with. Instead, it offers a natural way to relieve pain, fight symptoms of anxiety in a safe and legal way.
Where does CBD come from?
CBD can be found in a wide variety of plants but is generally produced either from high potency cannabis or industrial hemp. In Europe, generally, only hemp-derived CBD is legal. The cultivation of the plant species Cannabis Sativa L. (Hemp) is permitted in Europe as long as the THC content is within the legal limits.
The misconception about traces of THC
The commercial sale of raw hemp and hemp derived products, including CBD, is legal if the THC content does not exceed 0.2% of the plant. However, the most common misconception both in Europe and the USA is that these commercial THC limits also apply to consumer sales, which is not the case. To quote the Home Office:
“If a CBD ‘product’ contained any controlled cannabinoids, unintentionally or otherwise (e.g. THC or CBD-V), then it is highly likely that the product would be controlled under the 1971 Act and therefore unlawful to possess and supply.”
Understanding the difference between CBD and THC
Although CBD and THC are derived from the same plant and can often be confused for one another, they vary in their uses quite extensively. Because CBD doesn’t have the same effect on our minds as THC can have, it is legal and allowed to be used for medicinal purposes as long as it is properly regulated.
CBD has many health benefits. It has been known to provide a natural alternative to pain relief, offering sufferers of chronic pain and illness a way to alleviate their symptoms. Coming in a wide variety of forms such as oils, creams and capsules, CBD can help people to deal with pain, inflammation, seizures and can aid sleep and it is becoming increasingly available in health and wellness products.
The many benefits which CBD has are often overlooked because of confusion and questions over whether it’s legal.
